It is responsible for accurately controlling the flow direction and pressure of hydraulic oil, so that the huge rudder blades obey orders. Without it, the ship would go astray and the problem would be serious. Understanding what it is used for is the first step for you to choose the right product and use it in the right place.
We must first clarify the concept clearly. The full name of this special valve is the steering gear hydraulic control valve group. It is by no means a simple switch. You might as well think of it as a highly integrated "command system." It integrates many functional components such as reversing valve, relief valve, and one-way valve. Its core task is to receive tiny instructions from the bridge, and then amplify the instructions into huge hydraulic energy to drive the steering gear.
In the ship's environment of high vibration, heavy salt spray and compact space, it must be durable, respond quickly, and have high accuracy. If you are engaged in related application work, you must have such a picture in your mind: it is a key bridge connecting electrical signals and mechanical movements.
You must be particularly concerned about how on earth this big ship can turn left and right as it pleases, and the angle of rotation can be as precise as you want. In fact, this all relies on the amazing precise control capabilities of the special valve. It relies on the internal precision valve core and valve sleeve to cooperate with each other to extremely accurately control the amount of oil entering the cylinder and the flow direction of the oil. For example, when you want to make the boat turn 5 degrees, it will only put in enough oil to allow the rudder blades to turn 5 degrees, not even a drop more. This is the so-called "servo" or "proportional" control function.
For those who have product innovation needs, it is very important to understand that this control accuracy is one of the core indicators, because it is directly related to the ship's maneuverability and route correction capabilities.
When sailing at sea, safety is always the primary consideration. The stable operation of the steering gear at critical moments is crucial. Once it fails, the consequences will be disastrous. The special valve fully takes this key factor into consideration during the design stage, and multiple safety protection mechanisms are carefully built into it.
Among them, the most important function is the "hydraulic lock". When the rudder blade accurately turns to the designated position and no further action is required, the valve will quickly lock the oil circuit in an instant, effectively preventing the oil from flowing back, thereby ensuring that the rudder blade can be firmly fixed in the corresponding position and effectively resist the impact of sea water. In addition, if the system pressure is too high, the relief valve in the valve will immediately open for pressure relief operation to protect the entire pipeline and related equipment from being damaged due to excessive pressure. Therefore, when selecting a valve, you must focus on whether its safety configuration is complete.
You may have doubts in your mind, are the steering gear valves of all ships exactly the same? The answer is obviously no. The emphasis here is really quite complicated. For example, when you apply a steering gear valve to a large ocean-going cargo ship, the requirement for the valve is to have a large flow capacity and extremely high reliability, and it must be able to withstand long-term continuous operation.
If it is used on a high-speed passenger ro-ro ship or a warship, the requirements will be completely different, becoming "fast" and "accurate", that is, the reversal speed must be extremely fast and the response must be extremely sensitive. For some small fishing boats or engineering boats, more emphasis may be placed on compact structure and cost economy. Therefore, you must adapt special valves with different flow levels and control accuracy according to the target ship type you are targeting.
Okay, now comes the most practical part. When faced with so many products on the market, how do you go about choosing? I suggest you start with the following hard indicators.
First, look at the material and workmanship. Since the marine environment is extremely harsh, the valve body must be made of corrosion-resistant high-quality cast steel or cast iron, with high processing accuracy and good surface treatment. Secondly, look at the brand and reputation, and give priority to products certified by classification societies (such as CCS, ABS certification), which is equivalent to official endorsement. Furthermore, don’t just look at samples. If conditions permit, it is best to check the actual test report of the product to understand its response time, internal leakage and other key data. Remember, expensive products are not necessarily the best, but the cheapest products are often unreliable.
Once you have selected something, it will be in vain if it is not installed properly. When performing installation operations, the most critical thing is to ensure that the hydraulic oil has good cleanliness, which is the key to the normal operation of all hydraulic components. Once the pipeline purging work is not completely clean, even a tiny bit of iron filings will most likely cause the delicate valve core to become stuck, or even directly lead to its scrapping. In addition, the installation direction and wiring method of the valve must be strictly in accordance with the instructions. If they are reversed, it will inevitably cause a lot of trouble.
In daily maintenance, it is necessary to regularly check whether the valve is leaking, and at the same time listen carefully to the sound it makes when working to see if there are any abnormalities. The most important thing is that the hydraulic oil and filter element must be replaced in time according to the maintenance cycle. Only in this way can the special valve be given the most appropriate protection. If you can do daily inspections properly, then there will be no problem in using this valve for ten to eight years.
